Portrait Painting
Our Year 2 pupils have learnt how to paint portraits as part of their Art curriculum. They started off by looking at the work of portrait artists, and learning how to mix skin tone colours, and paint facial features.
Mrs McCarty and Mrs Breingan, the Year 2 class teachers, wanted to give the pupils a purposeful reason to learn how to paint portraits, and thought a wonderful way to do this would be through the school’s links to Orchard House Care Home. The residents were delighted to help and sent photos of themselves for the children to study and copy.
Mrs McCarty, said: “The children have had many discussions about how Covid has affected the elderly and were really excited to do something nice for the residents.” Once they had completed their paintings, the children wrote messages to the residents, who thought they were “wonderful” and “made the home buzz with happiness”. Some residents put them up on their wall, and others spent a long time studying the children’s work.
Kim Fleming, Orchard House General Manager, said: “We are so grateful to the students of Broadlea Primary for their delightful portraits, I know that the residents were thrilled.”
We think the children's observational skills and careful colour matching are fabulous!
We look forward to finding more ways that our children can interact with the wider community through art based projects … watch this space!
