Attendance & Absence
The Importance of Attendance
Regular attendance is essential for every child’s progress, learning, wellbeing and sense of belonging in our school community. Children who attend school consistently are more likely to achieve their academic goals and develop important friendships and life skills.
Our Attendance Expectations for 2026-27:
● School Target: 96% attendance or higher for all pupils.
● Please aim for your child to be in school every day, arriving on time for a prompt start to learning.
● The school day begins at 8:30am, with the gates opening at 8.20am.
Practical Tips for Good Attendance
● Establish a consistent bedtime and morning routine.
● Schedule medical and dental appointments outside of school hours whenever possible.
● Make sure your child is up to date with health check-ups and vaccinations.
● Prepare school bags, uniforms, and lunches the night before.
● If you are experiencing any difficulties with attendance or punctuality, please let us know—we are here to help.
Reporting Absences
If your child is unwell or unable to attend, please notify the school office before 8:45am on each day of absence by:
● Phone: 01983 402403
● Email: attendance@broadleaprimary.co.uk
Please provide your child’s name, class and reason for absence.
When Should My Child Stay at Home?
We understand it can sometimes be difficult to know whether your child is well enough to attend school. As a general guide, please follow NHS guidance:
Your child should stay at home if they have:
● A high temperature (38°C or above)
● Vomiting or diarrhoea – for 48 hours after the last episode
● A contagious infection such as chickenpox, measles, or impetigo
Your child can usually come to school with:
● A minor cold or sore throat (unless they have a high temperature)
● A mild headache
● Tiredness (unless accompanied by other symptoms)
If your child has a long-term condition such as asthma or allergies, please keep us informed so we can support them appropriately.
When in doubt, please contact the school office or refer to the NHS guidance: "Is my child too ill for school?" available on the NHS website.
We want every child in school and learning, but we also want to keep our whole school community healthy and safe.
We value your partnership and commitment to your child’s education. If you have any challenges, questions or concerns about attendance, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
